Somayeh Rafiei

Somayeh Rafiei (born 1982) is an activist and political scientist in the field of environment and Representative of constituency of Tehran, Ray, Shemiranat, Islamshahr and Pardis in the 11th term of the Islamic Parliament of Iran. She is a member of the Agriculture, Water and Natural Resources Committee and is the head of the environment faction. Rafiei is also a member of the women’s faction of the Islamic Parliament of Iran.
-The initiator of the establishment a Parliamentary Center for the Climate Change in the Persian Gulf/MENA Region with the special approach on dust and sand storm monitoring.

Rafiei is one of the main supporters of the ban on tra

 fishing in Iranian waters, and since the beginning of her tenure as the head of the environment faction, she has pursuing the approval of laws in this field.

Assisting in the approval of the Clean Air Act,and attempts for monitoring the managers and institutions that have failed in the implementation of the Clean Air Law. Introducing some senior managers to the judiciary officials due to non-compliance with the Clean Air Act.

She was the vice – chair of the 20th conference of the Assembly of Asia -Pacific parliamentarians’ Conference on Environment and Development (APPCED) in South Korea(June,2023)

Helsinki Policy Forum Health Working Group Meeting in Muscat, Oman, 13 October

The Helsinki Policy Forum Health Working Group met in Muscat, Oman on the 13th of October. Officials and experts from Iran, the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation, Oman, the Order of Malta, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye participated.


Helsinki Policy Forum Energy, Environmental and Economy Working Group Meeting in Muscat, 12 October

The Helsinki Policy Forum Energy, Environment and Economy Working Group met in Muscat, Oman on the 12th of October. Officials and experts from Finland, Iran, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye participated. Discussion was focused on identifying ways in which countries could cooperate to tackle and minimise the impacts of sand and dust storms, desertification, and water scarcity in the region.


WPN Advisory Group meeting, 8 November 2023

The Women Parliamentarian Network (WPN) Advisory Group convened for its second online meeting on 8 November. The WPN Advisory Board represents the diverse membership of the Network and guides its strategic direction and activities. The meeting was attended by representatives from Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Iran, Iraq, Northern Ireland, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden.

The purpose of the meeting was to finalise the WPN Action Plan and determine the points for discussion at the next in-person meeting of the Network in December. Themes of discussion included climate change, violence against women, and women’s access to employment and political participation.

The group also discussed the effects of the escalation of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict on women and children in Gaza, following the events of 7 October.
